Where to Visit - Piel Island

« Go Back

Visit atmospheric Piel Island, just off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness, and experience a day out with a difference.  Meet the King of Piel and members of the family in their island home.  A short ferry ride from neighbouring Roa Island brings you to Piel where you can visit ruined Piel Castle and walk round this peaceful island nature reserve. In Medieval times Piel was an important port and the Island was part of the original grant of land to the Cistercian Monks of Furness Abbey.  The present castle has fourteenth century origins and commands spectacular views out to the Irish Sea. Refreshments “by royal appointment” at the Bunk House Bar.

Acces to the island is dependent on weather and tides or email pielisland@tiscali.co.uk. Wildcamping subject to advance booking. For groups contact the island.
