You may not know it but nestling in front of Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Trust Townend site just south of Grasmere on the A591 within a spacious car park for patrons sits Villa Colombina. Formally Dove Cottage tea rooms it was relaunched in 2005; going back to his apprenticeship roots chef/proprietor Mike Metcalfe is holding true to the fulsome flavours that create the feast of Italian fare that’s on offer here. During the day the menu follows traditional tea room type food catering for guests of Dove Cottage and tourist alike. But when the evening comes a subtle transition happens – soft music, the low lighting with glittering fairy lights create a mediterranean ambience that is welcoming, friendly for groups, yet sufficiently intimate for couples to enjoy an evening on their own. Coupled with the great food and good service, competitively priced – it’s an evening to remember for all the right reasons.
