Welcome to The Lake District
Many think the Lake District needs very little introduction. After all it is widely recognised as one of the outstanding tourist areas in the world and quite rightly so. Here in this beautiful corner of England there is everything for the most discerning of visitors. Where else can you enjoy such magnificent scenery, fabulous walking countryside, engaging family attractions and museums, glorious historic homes and gardens, pretty stone villages, bustling small towns, festivals for every interest, food and drink to rival the best, outdoor activities of all kinds, and a literary and artistic tradition that continues to this day. Little wonder that millions of people every year flock to enjoy the wonders of the largest of our National Parks.
They come to savour the rich traditions and the history which down the years have proved such an inspiration to writers, poets and painters. They and others continue to celebrate all that is good about the Lake District. This guide will hopefully point you in all the right directions so that you, too, can enjoy the wonderful diversity that is the English Lakes.
Amazingly the National Park itself only covers an area of 885 square miles and stretches just 30 miles from west to east and 35 from north to south. Yet crammed into these boundaries is an area of such natural beauty that it is little wonder that visitors keep coming back.
